In this busy world, what CAN anyone do in five minutes, let alone ONE?
In August 2011 I took up a new full-time job managing talent in a 1000++ strong organization. It’s a pretty unique place, with a motto of “Work Hard, Play Harder” – I’m still at the Work Hard stage, not even touching Play yet. That’s because I’m running so hard to keep up with everything & everyone.
Coming from a consulting background, I’m pretty much up to date in tools, techniques & models. However, I’m not super confident yet of my people-management skills. Being a manager, I’m responsible for how my own team experience the organization. Simple AND complex. I just need to manage, right? Well – have a look at this:
“Business is simple. Management’s job is to take care of employees. The employees’ job is to take care of the customers. Happy customers take care of the shareholders. It’s a virtuous circle.”
– John Mackey, Founder & CEO, Whole Foods Market.
The only thing I can see in the quote is that I still have a whole ocean-wide (full?) to learn about managing people; getting them to get the work done AND ensuring that they give their utmost best in everything they do, everyday.
The One Minuter posts are my almost daily bits of learnings that take about one to five minutes to read. I want this to be a place for other busy people to pop by and pick up a tip or a thought that can make the day a little better.
So join me in my journey. If you’d like to share your experience as a manager or someone who’s reporting to a manager, please write in the comments section or send me an email to faz [dot] kamar [at] gmail [dot] com.
In the meantime – up, up and away!
